The crypto realm is rapidly gaining mainstream adoption. In August 2021, United Wholesale Mortgage (UWMC -2.75%), the second-largest mortgage lender in the U.S., announced it would accept Bitcoin to settle mortgage payments from its customers. Expect further momentum in crypto stocks as more companies join in the blockchain revolution.

Obviously, the debate about whether cryptocurrencies are commodities or equities still continues at the federal level. The ultimate decision about this classification will determine whether the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) or the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) polices the sector.

Robinhood can combine its commission-free model with scaling the number of cryptocurrencies on the platform, gaining a massive competitive advantage over both traditional and decentralized exchanges. The company also could offer the same crypto analytics services as Coinbase to further promote trust in the sector and boost its adoption.

The world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, Ethereum, uses 62.56 kilowatt-hours of electricity per transaction. XRP is the world’s most energy efficient cryptocurrency, using 0.0079 kilowatt-hours of electricity per transaction.

One of the conceits of cryptocurrencies is that anyone can mine them using a computer with an Internet connection. However, mining popular cryptocurrencies requires considerable energy, sometimes as much energy as entire countries consume. The expensive energy costs and the unpredictability of mining have concentrated mining among large firms whose revenues run into billions of dollars.

However, in 2021, there was a backlash against donations in bitcoin because of the environmental emissions it caused. Some agencies stopped accepting bitcoin and others turned to “greener” cryptocurrencies. The U.S. arm of Greenpeace stopped accepting bitcoin donations after seven years. It said: “As the amount of energy needed to run bitcoin became clearer, this policy became no longer tenable.”

On 19 October 2021, the first bitcoin-linked exchange-traded fund (ETF) from ProShares started trading on the NYSE under the ticker “BITO.” ProShares CEO Michael L. Sapir said the ETF would expose bitcoin to a wider range of investors without the hassle of setting up accounts with cryptocurrency providers. Ian Balina, the CEO of Token Metrics, stated that SEC approval of the ETF was a significant endorsement for the crypto industry because many regulators globally were not in favor of crypto, and retail investors were hesitant to accept crypto. This event would eventually open more opportunities for new capital and new people in this space.

If you want to use cryptocurrency to buy products and services, you will need to visit a cryptocurrency exchange. These are businesses that allow you to buy or sell cryptocurrencies from other users at the current market price, similar to a stock. After buying the coins, you will need to transfer them to a digital wallet or use a third-party service like Coinbase to store your coins.

Bitfinex is one of the older exchanges in the scene. Unfortunately, that doesn’t come with a great record, with a major hack in 2016, some legal and banking issues, and close associations with Tether, which has come under great scrutiny at times. Still, the exchange offers most services you could want, with competitive trading fees and a reasonable coin listing.

Bitstamp – Another legacy US available exchange, that sometimes makes the top 10 bracket depending on the listing you’re looking at. Only subject to a single small (phishing based) hack, the exchange has a generally good track record, but does not offer margin/options trading, or on-exchange staking or other yield farming options, with per-trade fees on par with Coinbase Pro.

First of all: Don’t use Coinbase Basic. The fees on it are exorbitant, and it just goes through the same market under the covers as the (free) Coinbase Pro. You can also swap assets between the two instantly for free at any time, so for the sake of this post I’m considering the best of both options.

I was originally going to include these in the list, but the volume on even Uniswap was surprisingly low enough to not make the cut. The general structure for these is all the same, however. Connect your wallet to the app, and trade from there. You’ll have to pay network fees ontop of exchange fees though, which messes with the cost valuation a bit, and generally makes all of them significantly worse fees than the centralized exchanges.
